Ambien, also known as Zolpidem, is a short-term medication which is prescribed to treat insomnia, as well as a number of brain illnesses. This drug contains a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic which is short-acting. It enhances gamma-aminobutyric acid (known as GABA), which is an inhibitory neurotransmitter. In the same position as benzodiazepines, this medication binds to the GABAA receptors. Ambien works very quickly and can alter the brain within 15 minutes of taking this medication. The drug is only effective for a short period of 2 to 3 hours.
There are many different names to desribe Ambien (Zolpidem). Some other names for this drug include Lioran, Myslee, Nasen, Nytamel, Sanval, Edluar, Zolpimist, Damixan, Adormix, Ambien, Ambien CR, Hypnogen, Ivedal, Somidem, Stilnoct, Stilnox, Stilnox CR, Zolnod, Zolpihexal, Sucedal, Zodorm, Zoldem and Zolsana. This drug is also known as Zolnox, but only in South Africa.
Ambien is not guaranteed to maintain sleep, however, it has been shown to be very effective in helping people get to sleep in the first place. This is Ambien's biggest selling point. Its effects are often described as hypnotic which is similar to benzodiazepine drugs. However, on a molecular level Ambien is distinct from the traditional benzodiazepine molecules. So, Ambien is listed as an imidazopyridine type of drug. A benzodiazepine receptor antagonist named Flumazenil, commonly prescribed to treat benzodiazepine overdoses, has the benefit of reversing Ambien's memory impairing, sedative and hypnotic side-effects.
Ambien can also be taken as a muscle relaxant or anti-convulsant. Its beneficial results will begin to take effect after around 10 to 20 times the dose that is required to sedate someone. It is for this reason that it has not been given approval for use as a muscle relaxant or seizure preventing medication. There are negative side-effects to taking large doses of Ambien including amnesia and hallucinations.
